In 2020, the government is likely to pick a company to develop second international airport (SIA) in Nijgadh. Tourism Minister Yogesh Bhattarai has put the project in his priority list and vowed to lay the foundation stone for the project to start construction in 2020. The Investment Board of Nepal (IBN) has already shortlisted the Zürich Airport International AG to construct the airport that will be built in three phases. With an estimated total cost of US$ 6.57 billion, this will be the biggest and the busiest airport in South Asia.  Following the completion of all three phases, the airport is projected to handle 60 million passengers annually.
